Play Selection for 2018-2019

Ann Arbor Civic Theatre is currently seeking directors for its 2018-19 Main Stage season.  Civic produces six main stage productions--musicals and non-musicals--each season.  A2CT invites directors to submit to direct a play or musical of their choice.

All directors interested in A2CT’s next season should submit an application (available at the bottom of this page) which includes a resume, references, and short summary of the show, as well as the director’s vision for the production for up to three titles. The deadline for submissions is 4pm Wednesday, November 15.

A2CT aims to serve diverse audiences and provide opportunities for diverse performers, designers, and technicians. Each proposal should consider how your production will promote participant diversity (gender, race, age, etc.), for example: through selecting plays that provide roles for actors of all ages, choosing plays that highlight the experience of under-represented communities, or considering flexible casting opportunities.

A2CT is committed to its director-driven selection process; however, as Ann Arbor’s theatre scene has become increasingly crowded, which makes it more challenging to attract audiences and participants, fill seats, and earn revenue to pay for the high-quality productions that our volunteers work so hard to produce and perform. Therefore, we encourage directors to consider crowd-pleasing plays – shows that are well-known but not over-performed – so that you will be rewarded by audiences and we will sell enough tickets to continue supporting your work!

In particular, the survey we conducted in Spring of 2017, which received over 100 responses, suggested three kinds of plays that are of greatest interest to our audiences. We encourage you to consider plays within these genres (Comedy/Farce, Classic Musicals, and Contemporary Musicals), a few examples of which are listed below. We will consider all proposals, including dramas and other shows that are not within the categories listed.

In addition to choosing plays that are likely to draw a crowd, we also encourage all those asked to submit a full proposal to have a marketing liaison and describe a plan for marketing and community engagement through social media and special events. As a community theater, we would like to hear how you plan to connect with and engage the larger community, whether through free performances at non-traditional venues, audience talkbacks, connecting with local organizations on issues related to play themes, etc.
