Ann Arbor Civic Theatre rounds out its 2012-13 main stage season with the compelling musical drama Chess, directed by Glenn Bugala Friday, Saturday and Sunday tickets are $25, with tickets at $22 for seniors and $13 for students. On Thursday only, all seats are $19, with $13 tickets for students. Tickets and information are available online, through the A2CT office at 734-971-2228, or at the door of the theater before each performance.

Chess, the ancient game becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super-power politics and international intrigues. Set in the 1980’s at the World Chess Championships, the pawns in this drama form a love triangle: Freddy, the coarse American chess star; Anatoly, the earnest Russian champion; and Florence, a Hungarian-American female assistant who arrives with Freddy but falls for Anatoly. Featuring the 1980’s pop hit “One Night in Bangkok,” Chess brings the Cold War era to vibrant life. A2CT’s production is the first in the area to present the recently-released London version of the musical.

“I love the music in Chess because of its beauty, its elegance, its melding of classical and rock styles, and the intelligence of its lyrics,” says director Glenn Bugala. “Most of all, I admire the style of the show, its delightful surprises, its large ensemble numbers and its intimate love songs. People will be blown away by the power of the score.”

Toward that end, Bugala has enlisted the Ann Arbor Civic Chorus, under the direction of Linda Jones, to expand the ensemble of singers to nearly 80 people. The choir will be onstage for the entire show, and will provide a vocal backdrop for the featured actors.
