KIDS Friday, March 20, 4:30-6:30 and Saturday, March 21, 2:00-4:00 at the A2CT Studio

ADULTS Friday, March 20, 7:00-10:00 and Saturday, March 21, 5:00-8:00 at the A2CT Studio

Junior Theatre:

All auditioning for Junior Theatre will be taught a song at auditions. Actors should arrive dressed to move. Actors should plan to attend auditions either Friday, March 20 from 4:30-6:30 or Saturday, March 21 from 2:00-4:00. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete audition paperwork and plan to stay for the entire 2 hours. Only attend one session.


Adult Cast:

All adults auditioning should prepare 16-32 bars a musical theater song from within the last 20-30 years. May be an up-tempo song or a ballad. No pop songs, please. Actors should arrive dressed to move.

Actors should plan to attend auditions either Friday, March 20 from 7:00-10:00 or Saturday, March 21 from 5:00-8:00. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete audition paperwork. A dance combination will be taught to all auditioning at the beginning of the audition time; and will be performed in small groups. Vocal auditions will follow. All are free to leave once their individual vocal auditions are complete. Only attend one session.


Call Backs if needed will be on Sunday, March 22 from 4:00-6:00pm for Junior Theatre and 5:00-7:00 for Adults. The cast list will be posted by Tuesday, March 24 at 9:00am.


Note for Junior Theatre and Adult Auditions: We will not be using British accents in this production. Please prepare your audition with your own, lovely, natural accent. There will be no line readings at the initial auditions. Your singing is your acting audition. Adults, think about your vocal selection and how it highlights not only your beautiful voice, but also your ability to convey emotions and tell a story through song.


Please bring ALL potential conflicts to the audition and thoroughly complete the conflict calendar. Note: there are no conflicts allowed from May 17-June 7. The audition form you sign is a contract with Ann Arbor Civic Theatre and this production. Please be honest and up front about any conflicts. Conflicts will not necessarily impact casting decisions.


Rehearsal Schedule:

Rehearsals will be Sundays from 5:00-8:00 for the full company, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 for Junior Theatre and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm for Adults.


The first all-company Read/Sing-Through will be on Sunday, April 5 from 5:00-8:00pm (location TBD). A parent meeting for Junior Theatre participants will immediately precede the rehearsal from 4:30-5:00.


Character Breakdown


Junior Theater Cast:

Matilda Wormwood - An imaginative girl who is clever and wise far beyond her years. She has a thirst for learning that cannot be quenched. The actor cast in this role will be extremely mature and ready to handle carrying an entire 21/2 hour production. There is a lot of singing, numerous monologues and some dancing.


Classroom Kids:

Bruce Bogtrotter - Matilda’s classmate who is often tormented by Miss Trunchbull. He has a solo in Revolting Children.

Lavender - Matilda’s self-proclaimed best friend. Extra small and very plucky.

Amanda Thripp - Matilda’s classmate whose hair is always in braids. Miss Trunchbull does not like braids.

Alice - Matilda’s classmate.

Hortensia - Matilda’s classmate.

Eric - Matilda’s classmate. Miss Trunchbull stretches his ears out.

Nigel - Matilda’s classmate.

Tommy - Matilda’s classmate.

Additional classmates of Matilda and others listed above.


Michael Wormwood - Matilda’s dim-witted older brother. The favorite child of both parents. This actor will either double as a Big Kid or be a non-singing role.

Big Kids - Older students at Matilda’s school. They are disillusioned from years of the Trunchbull. One of these actors may double as Michael Wormwood.


Adult Cast:

Miss Agatha Trunchbull - The tyrannical headmistress at Matilda’s school. She despises children. We will consider actors of any gender for this role. Tenor range.

Miss Honey - Matilda’s kind-hearted teacher. She is growing tired of living in fear under Miss Trunchbull. Mezzo-Soprano.

Mr. Wormwood - Matilda’s uncaring father. A slimy, greedy used car salesman. High-baritone or low-tenor.

Mrs. Wormwood - Matilda’s self-absorbed, negligent mother. An amateur ballroom dancer. Belter.

Mrs. Phelps - A kind librarian. Either a non-singing role or will double as a member of the ensemble.

The Escapologist - A character in a story Matilda tells to Mrs. Phelps who comes to life in their imagination. May also be in the ensemble. Baritone.

The Acrobat - A character in a story Matilda tells to Mrs. Phelps who comes to life in their imagination. May also be in the ensemble. Mezzo-Soprano/Alto.

Rudolpho - Mrs. Wormwood’s ballroom dancing partner. Also in the ensemble. Tenor.

Doctor - Mrs. Wormwood’s doctor when she goes into labor with Matilda. Also in the ensemble. Tenor, Baritone, Soprano or Mezzo Soprano.

Children’s Entertainers - Party entertainers at the start of the show. Also in the ensemble.

Ensemble - Includes: Parents, Cook, Henchman 1, 2 & 3, additional Big Kids.
